The Experience of Verbal Violence between Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: Little research has been done to explore verbal violence between nurses and other health care professionals in a clinical setting. The few studies that exist were conducted using quantitative methods. The purpose of this phenomenological research was to identify the nurses" experience of verbal violence from other nurses.

Methods: Data was collected through documents, observations, and tape-recorded in-depth interviews from 12 nurses who are currently working at an A hospital located in C city. Data was analyzed using the phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi.

Results: From the participants" statements, six significant themes were identified as follows: lowering of self-esteem due to insulting remarks, complication of emotions, ostracizing individuals, creating negative atmospheres, coping with the situation passively, and waiting for the situation to be resolved on its own. And four categories were gloominess, isolation, negative coping, and proficiency through time passes.

Conclusion: According to the results, nurses experienced verbal violence from fellow nurses. There was no regard for each other. Such relationships would conflicts among nurses. Therefore a plan is needed to enhance respectable, collaborative, and supportive relationships in order to resolve the conflicts that arise.
